This morning the nominees for the 85th Annual Academy Awards were announced and the number of African American on the list were few. Very few. With that said, I’d like to send a big hug to Quvenzhane Wallis, the tiniest nominee in the Best Actress category, for her role as Hushpuppy in the movie “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” The bayou drama was also nominated in the categories of Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director.
A big shout out also goes to Denzel Washington for his Best Actor nod for the portrayal of a substance abusing pilot in “Flight.” The movie also received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Though no Black actors were recognized for their acting in the highly controversial “Django Unchained,” the movie was nominated for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz), Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Sound Editing.
The 85th Annual Academy awards will air live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on the ABC network February 24th, 2013. To check out the complete list of 2013 nominees simply click here.
