Let’s face it the news can be boring at times. If it has nothing to do with celebrity gossip, sports or some form of entertainment, much of America will flip to another channel, turn the page or search for a site more worthy of their precious time. I’ve done it and you probably have too. It’s OK to admit it. I won’t judge.
That’s why I’m going to give props this week to comedian Jimmy Fallon. I don’t know how he did it or what kind of life-changing promises he had to make to get this laugh, but for five minutes this dude managed to get millions of people to actually pay attention to a newsworthy issue by enlisting President Barack Obama to help him “slow jam the news.” The President, Fallon and The Roots made the topic of freezing federal student loan interest rates not only hilarious but informative. Can you imagine if the “Preesy of the United Steezy” had Fallon and The Roots backing him up every time he addressed the country from his podium at the White House? Just the thought makes me giggle.
Ah. If news were this entertaining all the time the world could possibly be a better place.
OK, that may be pushing it a bit, but a least more people (like my high schools students for instance) would pay a little bit more attention to what’s happening in our country and on the rest of the planet.
Maybe. But that’s just my theory.
Until next time…
